Emily Mahon and Kimberly Glyder on Collaborating for All of You, Every Single One

All of You Every Single One, a literary novel set in the bohemian enclave of early 20th century Vienna, follows a group of queer-identifying characters before and during World War II. The process behind the cover took a few starkly different courses before settling on an approach that focused specifically on artists of the Vienna Secession movement. The original idea from the Art Director, Deb Wood, was to focus on sense of place and/or a single object that could represent the story. One of the key characters in the story is a tailor and so I felt that the thread/needle/mannequin represented a key element of the story. I wanted to include some of the striking typography that is relevant to the period.

Kimberly Glyder on Designing Gerta

Gerta is a fictional account of a young woman’s experience during the expulsion of Sudeten Germans amid the Brno death march in 1945. The main character, Gerta, is half Czech and half German, but is forced to leave with her child born out of terrible circumstances.

As with any sensitive topic, the challenge is to find visuals that inspire. I chose to focus on Gerta herself and also to hint at a sense of place.

The first round of comps ranges from bolder, more expressive hand drawn lettering to quieter comps showing mother and child.

Kimberly Glyder on Designing Dear Mrs. Bird

Back in early 2017, Jaya Miceli, art director at Scribner, asked me to work on the jacket for Dear Mrs. Bird, a novel by AJ Pearce. The book takes place during World War II in England and centers on a young woman who answers letters at a newspaper as an advice columnist. These letters are addressed to “Mrs. Bird.” Given a great deal of creative freedom on this title, one of the challenges I had was to differentiate my design from the UK edition, which is a beautiful package featuring a bird.

Kimberly Glyder: Typography and Covers

"Like many designers, I have always been a visual person, painting and drawing throughout my childhood. At the same time, I was a voracious reader and loved perusing books at bookstores, not just because I wanted to read them, but because I was also intrigued by their cover designs and the specific visuals chosen to represent the writing. For every book report I had in school, I took the time to illustrate a corresponding “book cover,” (which may or may not have helped my grade)."
