Nathan Burton Serves Up the Cover for Sophia of Silicon Valley

Nathan Burton is a London-based freelance designer and illustrator. Here he talks us through designing Sophia of Silicon Valley by Anna Yen.

I was briefed by Siripant Ploy at Harper Collins to come up with a cover for Anna Yen’s Sophia of Silicon Valley, a comic novel whose protagonist is finding her way through a male/geek dominated industry. They didn’t want it to look too chick lit and wanted something iconic and eye-catching.

The Starbucks coffee cup was suggested by Siripant which I was very happy to run with.

It was one of those rare dream jobs which pretty much got resolved on the first pass. I tried a couple of other options to pad out the initial selection but I was very pleased when they went with the version they did. Eagle eyed readers will notice that I managed to spell the title of the book incorrectly on the first round of visuals, a common occurrence for me which beggars belief given how few words there are to spell check on a book cover!
