2021 AU Presses, Book, Jacket, and Journal Show Selections

Selections Announced in 2021 AUPresses Book, Jacket, and Journal Show

The Association of University Presses (AUPresses) proudly announces the juried selections for its 2021 Book, Jacket, and Journal Show.

The annual show, now in its 56th year, honors the university publishing community’s design and production professionals. The Association recognizes achievement in design, production, and manufacture of books, jackets, covers, and journals, and the Show serves as a spark to conversations and source of ideas about intelligent, creative, and resourceful publishing.

Every year at Spine Magazine over in my little UP corner, I like to comb through and highlight my favorite jackets. After seeing my favorites below, take a look at the full collection of books which includes interiors as well!

The 101 outstanding examples of university press publications are now on virtual display at https://design.up.hcommons.org/.

University of Chicago Press

Designer: Natalie Sowa

The mood created with this image and decorative display typeface is so lovely. The typography is so delicate against the soft matte photograph, I love it.

University of Minnesota Press

Designer: Michel Vrana

The energy of this cover is so fantastic, it reminds me of a David Carson piece (a high compliment!)

Duke University Press

Designer: Aimee C. Harrison and Drew Sisk

I am such a sucker for an all type cover, especially when you can get away with overlaying textures like this one. The Dido-style serif is such a bold contrast and the colors simply vibrate!

University of New South Wales Press

Designer: Alissa Dinallo

Brilliant! The illustration is perfect for this cover and the mirrored distortions on the typography are a lovely touch.

Oxford University Press

Designer: Steve Leard

Wow! This cover is both terrifying and riveting. I love the modern minimalist approach to this so the clever illustration can take center stage.

University of Wisconsin Press

Designer: Debbie Berne Design

I love when a cover design makes me actually laugh out loud! This is so clever. The Helvetica style typeface is the perfect contemporary face lift with this older photograph.

McGill-Queen’s University Press

Designer: David Drummond

It wouldn't be an AUP Book show without several winning entires by the super talented David Drummond. It was hard to pick just one of his winning entries but I love this cut paper collage with the lavender background.

Yale University Press

Designer: Jenny Volvoski

Ugh, absolutely stunning! This is such a thoughtful design, every single piece is perfect, all the way down to the shifting perspective grid that divides the image into... *9* pieces! 😱
