2021 AU Presses, Book, Jacket, and Journal Show Selections

Selections Announced in 2021 AUPresses Book, Jacket, and Journal Show

The Association of University Presses (AUPresses) proudly announces the juried selections for its 2021 Book, Jacket, and Journal Show.

The annual show, now in its 56th year, honors the university publishing community’s design and production professionals. The Association recognizes achievement in design, production, and manufacture of books, jackets, covers, and journals, and the Show serves as a spark to conversations and source of ideas about intelligent, creative, and resourceful publishing.

The University Press Round-up is back after a Holiday/New year hiatus! Thank you all for your submissions and great work this month. I love the current BIPOC scholarship coming from UP's, especially in February which was Black History Month. My favorite part about the UP design community is not just the thoughtful designs, but the important work these books do to educate us on important topics. It's a community I'm so proud to be a part of! Now without further ado...

Best University Press Covers of 2019

As tough as it was to narrow down, I've somehow come up with my favorite University Press book covers from this year. A special note of gratitude to Eric Wilder and Spine Magazine for giving me the platform. Thank you all for supporting this round-up each and every month! Your enthusiasm and support mean the world.

I am so thrilled I got to begin this feature this year since I have long thought that university press design was overlooked by design publications and design awards. As a University Press designer for many years (both in-house and freelance) I always felt there needed to be a dedicated coverage of all the great design happening out there beyond the annual AUP awards, so I'm honored that I got to create the space the UP-verse deserves.

Since July is a quiet pub month, I wanted to take this opportunity to celebrate an oft-overlooked area of UP Design: Series Designs. Series designs are a challenge to design; they require forethought to fit a wide variety of titles and the designer has to consider a package that can be replicated indefinitely without duplicating previous colors/symbols or breaking the pattern in a way that divorces the design from the rest of the series. Take a look at six examples of designers who really hit the mark on this challenge to produce beautifully memorable series designs.
